Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to Japanese in Years 2. This is an exciting stage of learning as many students already know basic greetings, a simple self introduction and some questions. We can therefore build on the language we have learnt in previous terms/years by adding important conversational phrases and more Q&A. If you are new to Japanese however, don't worry, as it will not take long to catch up.
In Term One the topic of study is Pets, including naming animals and describing them. This means we will be looking at colours and adjectives. The main focus in Term Two is 'My busy day', looking at what we do during a typical day. Then in Term 3 there will be short conversations in the form of Q&A and also a self-introduction. This will be presented as a dialogue between a teacher and the class. We will also continue to learn the 'hiragana' script. Much will be presented through songs, in videos and during in-class conversation practice. Added to this will be cultural aspects about daily life in Japan.

Song: Tokyo Bon
This song explores and presents some English words that are frequently used in Japanese. It has been written as Tokyo prepares for the 2020 Olympics and an influx of non-Japanese speaking visitors. There is also a dance that goes with the song. Enjoy!

A New Teacher comes to school
The purpose of this short dialogue is to combine a simple self-introduction with some simple questions and answers. Also included are some interjections, such as words showing surprise, praise or annoyance.

Key language explained
The song includes four different text types that are used in Japanese which I have colour coded.
Black is hiragana. Blue is romaji. Green is kanji. Red is katakana. Note also the different full stop. The purpose of this is just to highlight the variations for future reference. In class we will be focussing on the black type (hiragana) which is the most common. |
