Dear Students and Parents,
This Term we are going to attempt to move up in Belt Levels, from White to Black Belt. No, we are not doing karate in Japanese. Instead, students will try to move from a fairly simple self introduction to a more difficult one until students are introducing themselves in Japanese including their name, birthday, likes, dislikes, family members and pets. All materials are written in hiragana and kanji with the aim of continuing to consolidate reading ability in Japanese.
The process is simple. In class, students will be regularly tested when they are individually ready to attempt the next level. When students reach black belt, they are allowed to include more difficult phrases and expressions, depending on what they would like to say.

This is what you are trying to achieve...
How to progress
1. Please watch the YouTube links below which demonstrate what students need to be able to say for each level. This is also a good pronunciation guide.
2. The Powerpoint provides the script in a sentence by sentence format. Here the hiragana acts as prompts. Hiragana is used is to encourage authentic pronunciation. When students read Japanese, instead of Japanese written in the alphabetic script, students learn to speak correctly.
3. There are two audio mp3 files. One is the speech sentence by sentence with English. Start with this one first. When your confidence is up move to the second mp3 file: Japanese only.
4. Use the Handout document to prepare for your presentation. This is the full script.

Hints on how to study
- Work with a partner. Listen to each other and provide feedback.
- Write a Palm card with single words for each sentence. e.g. Name, age, hobby etc. This will guide you through your speech.
- Record your voice and listen to your own speech. This is a great way to improve.
- Mimic the pronunciation, pace and intonation of the speeches to sound as Japanese as possible.

Blue Belt
Congratulations on reaching the Blue Belt level. This is the final Shinji speech. Black Belt is next!
The Blue Belt speech has two new sentences:
1. Oostoraria jin desu ( I am from Australia)
2. Redorynch ni sunde imasu (I live in Redlynch)
To progress to the next level you need to learn this speech and present it with good pronunciation and fluency to your teacher. Use the script to work out the sentence order. Find all the sentences you know and then use a Hiragana chart to work out the others.
Note: There are some characters that are not hiragana. These are kanji. We studied the numbers in Year 3, remember? If you are unsure, ask Sensei.

Pitch Black Belt
The ultimate level for the ultimate self-introduction. Normally hidden from view, this level is only being made public for the second time since language learning began. It allows speakers to talk about wishes and wants, such as what they want to do in the the future, or where they want to travel to. To succeed at this level it is recommended that you learn as many verbs as possible.
Why not start with a song about verbs....
I hope this helps you remember some of the verbs in the powerpoint. Not sure if it is a classic song, but I did hear comments like 'elevator music'! The lyrics in the pdf document are also here - of course in hiragana, but you can check everything in the powerpoint if you are not sure.
