Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to Japanese in Year 3. This is an exciting stage of learning as most students already know basic greetings, a simple self introduction and some questions. We can therefore build on the language we have learnt in previous terms/years by adding important conversational phrases and more Q&A. The main focus in Term One at the start of the year is 'All About Me', with a special focus on numbers, such as ages, birthdays and calendars. Then in Term Two Japanese food and drinks, restaurants, and likes& dislikes will be studied. Yum! I will be introducing a new unit in Term Three called 'Holiday in Japan' which I hope will give students a chance to travel to many places and imagine life in Japan. In Term Four we will return to Cairns for the PLC Spring Fair and look at recycling and how we can help our planet. We will also practice and perform short skits in Japanese. Throughout the year we will continue to learn the 'hiragana' script. Much will be presented through songs, in videos and during in-class conversation practice. Added to this will be cultural aspects about daily life in Japan.

Fun conversations
We have studied several songs in Japanese. Using four songs as examples, students will practice and perform a skit in Japanese. The goal is to speak for at least one minute (but one and a half minutes is better). Apart from the words, correct body language can also be included.

Song:Tokyo Bon
This song explores and presents some English words that are frequently used in Japanese. It has been written as Tokyo prepares for the 2020 Olympics and an influx of non-Japanese speaking visitors. There is also a dance that goes with the song. Enjoy!

All about me
The goal of this unit is for students to say as much as possible about themselves. To help them get started there is a little Rap to sing. It includes the following: A greeting, name, age, year level, hobby/interest, where you live, closing statement.
