Dear Students and Parents,
There are several aspects of Japanese language and culture that will be the focus this year. Of course we will continue to build on last years learning, including reviewing songs & questions. In Term 1 the main focus is the story 'Sadako and the 1000 Paper Cranes'. We will make origami paper cranes as well as learning the meaning of the story. In Term 2 we will focus on two main areas: learning the hiragana script, and looking at activities and sports that we do. There is a song that includes this called: nani o shimasu ka. In Term 3 we will focus on self-introductions and other conversations aspects, as well as consolidating the Hiragana we have already learnt. Term 4 is all about food and restaurants. Yum! Much will be presented through songs, in videos and during in-class conversation practice. We will try to learn all the Hiragana so that students can explore the wonderful world of writing in Japanese. I love Hiragana and hope I can share this passion. There is a dedicated page for hiragana on this site.

Pet language explained
The song includes four different text types that are used in Japanese which I have colour coded.
Black is hiragana. Blue is romaji. Green is kanji. Red is katakana.
Note also the different full stop.
The purpose of this is just to highlight the variations for future reference.
In class we will be focussing on the black type (hiragana) which is the most common.
わたしのペットは犬です。
犬のなまえはPATCHです。
犬は一才です。
犬は大きいです。
犬はくろいです。
かわいいですね。
